It’s exactly twenty four minutes into the day where the whole nation decides to love one another. Presents are exchanged, hugs are given, and for the next twenty four hours for the most part all is right in the world. When you drive to the store Christmas morning to get the batteries you forgot for your sons robot people are actually smiling at you as you walk through the store. It’s a stark contrast from the day before when that old lady in Walmart almost hit you with her Cain as you took the last “tickle me Elmo” doll from the top shelf.
We have 365 days each year to “love thy neighbor” but it seems like Christmas is the only day that we have a worldwide truce. Valentine’s Day is made up of couples that love each other to death and single people that wish death upon those same couples, so you can’t count that day. So christmas it is! How can you possibly be mad when you’re getting presents? It’s the perfect plan. Wake up, hang out with family, and open presents. Even the socks from grandma are appreciated. My question is what about the other 364 days?
Imagine if Christmas was every day? Imagine everyone happy and actually being nice to one another regardless of race, religion, or favorite sports team? If we could ever pull that off I know John Lennon would be smiling from somewhere. The problem is we don’t realize that despite Christmas only being once a year, the act of being kind to one another doesn’t have to be. We could actually be courteous to each other every day.
What the world needs is for us to act like every day is Christmas. We would give without reason, the extra tip that you gave your waiter/waitress would happen on October 25th not December 25th.
Around this time you hear about random acts of kindness by people all over the country. I saw something on the news where this guy just loaded up his car with toys an surprised some of the Hurricane Sandy victims with presents. The NBA (national basketball association) did a toy drive for thousands of kids in different cities. Just looking at those kids faces as their favorite players handed out gifts to them put a knot in my throat. Imagine if there were random acts of kindness like this all the time?
So remember when Santa leaves and your cookies are gone it doesn’t mean your kindness and generosity have to leave with him.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
